I love books. Seems obvious since I'm here.
Lets get the key hobbies out of the way... When not at the computer or reading a book or laughing with friends... I am a film buff, an amateur photographer, a mountain climber and hiker (with the camera!).
I'm endlessly curious. I like exploring, from little known places to independent music, alternative films, small publishers... This carries over to the computer where I have a keen interest in independent shareware, independent games, alternative websites and communities.
About my library
I read a lot of fiction - modern and contemporary fiction mostly. I have a large number of science fiction and fantasy, more magical realism than fantasy.
On the non fiction the topics would be community, science, media and internet, programming, linguistics, feminism, development, ecology.
I have far less non fiction than fiction as I used to get them from the library whereas I would buy fiction to read it in the original language.
Now I found bookmooch it feels a lot better - I dont like abandoning books, but giving them to people who want them is a different matter.
I keep books I will want to reread, even far down the line, or that I want to have so I can lend to people in my cunning plan to hook them into a wider set of genres than they say they read. Or that I just have an emotional attachment too because I enjoyed them so much the first time around.
My criteria for giving away books are the following
* would I reread it if I had a year off,
* are there at least 20 other books in its style that I would reread first?
* would I lend it to people I know, or are there a dozen or more other books in its genre I would lend first
* does it have something unique that would make me want to reread it in a few years
* is it too good a book to gather dust on my shelves as I dont know anyone else who I could lend it to, and i wont reread for another 10 years
so yes, it's worth having a look it is not all books I didnt like, by far!
All the books I list here are pretty good books, some are uncommon/not very well known, almost all have been read so ask if you are curious. I have 1200+ books, with probably about 100 unread so am trying to clear out books I will not reread or lend.
Currently I am mooching around design/craft books and some poetry. I'd also like some more french/german books. |
