I had tried teaching myself to knit socks with several other books, and, in my opinion, this is the best book I have found. The instructions are simply written and the illustrations are great. I learned a new way to cast on so the sock tops would stretch but also how to try various yarn thicknesses. I've knitted socks from sock weight yarn up to chunky weight, and every one I have made them for loves them. I gave away so many that I didn't have a pair of my own. That's when I made me a pair of alpaca blend socks that are so soft they feel like angora on my feet! If you only know how to knit and purl, you can learn to knit socks with this book. Let me know how you like it.
