Reviews: ♥princessjulia♥ (USA: DE) (2008/07/01):
One of the best memoirs every written in my opinion. I felt like I knew McBride's entire family when I finished with this book. This is in my top five favorite books! I recommend it to family and friends all the time!

A really good read. What an amazing journey James McBride's mother took and what a wonderful job she did raising her 12 children. James told his family story so well that sometimes I felt I was there.

I found this story to be a bit "forced" and quite a bit embellished. Many of the stories just didn't ring true - more like fiction to me. It actually seemed that the author was very confused about his identity and blamed it on his race, rather than the dysfunctional family he lived in. And the family had a host of unhealthy relational patterns. The father(s) were absent, very young children were forced into adult roles and made to be responsible for younger siblings. Lack of communication skills abounded. They were very poor and thus lived in very bad neighborhoods with its ensuing problems. The author would have done better to focus on what a great accomplishment it was that his mother was able to have all her 12 children graduate from college rather than whining about his blackness. It came across quite racist to me.
