When his long-lost school sweetheart, Jesse, shows up unexpectedly, the still-single TV writer Carl Rooney is flattered by her enthusiastic interest in him--as if the 17 years since they have seen each other did not exist at all. Self-congratulation soon turns to bewilderment, though, as Carl realizes that Jesse truly believes they are still high-school seniors in the '70s, completely in love and planning a life together. An investigation into the bizarre events leading to their reunion soon lead the two into an adventure fraught with danger and excitement. As Jesse, reportedly drowned in a boating accident two months prior, comes to accept the reality of her memory loss and observes as an outsider the sometimes disappointing patterns of her adult life, Carl must come to terms with the circumstances of their long-ago breakup.
