Rolanda (USA: VA) (2008/07/11): This book is a bit of a slow read, but I loved the story and the characterizations. It is described as a "rediscovered masterpiece of world literature" and I would have to agree.
Doris Ann (USA: MD) (2009/05/31): I have mixed feelings about this international best seller---about the demise of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire....and some of the final players in that era... A friendship that had not been nurtured for 49 years begins anew with the two men sitting and exchange charged words for a number of hours.....recalling, eventually, their last time together, which included the wife of one of the men...and a hunt in the nearby forest...A hunt, which the book tell us, no game was caught...but something was lost forever---what was that loss....and how did it impact the once solid friendship? What happens now that they meet again? It is intense, interesting...and mesmerizing.
